A Visit to El Salvador

NEARLY 500 years ago, when the Spanish arrived in what is now El Salvador, the predominant tribe in the area called their territory Cuscatlán—a name that means “Land of the Jewel.” Today, most people in El Salvador are descendants of indigenous tribes and European settlers.

Salvadorans are known for being industrious and friendly. They are also courteous and respectful. People greet others politely before starting a conversation or when entering a business by saying,“Buenos días” (good morning) or “Buenas tardes” (good afternoon). In fact, Salvadorans in rural areas and small towns consider it rude to ignore a passerby and not say a greeting.

One of the foods Salvadorans enjoy most is the pupusa—a cornmeal (or rice) tortilla stuffed with cheese and beans, as well as pork or other fillings. Pupusas are often served with tomato sauce and curtido—a mixture of cabbage, carrots, onions, and spicy vinegar. Although some people use a knife and fork, the traditional way to eat pupusasis with the fingers.

In our school, the 4th Junior High School of Serres, we actively promote the benefits of a wider curriculum to students through a number of extra-curricular “educational programmes”. This is a list of the programmes  running  for the school year 2013-14:

• A theatrical performance    based on Homer’s epic poems “The Odyssey” and   “The Iliad” as well as on Euripides’ tragedy “Helen”.The supervisor teachers   are : Anthymidou A./ Dinidou D./ Hatzi E./ Kamaraki M./ Kyparissis M./ Mousa E./ Tomara D.

• An online newspaper in the form of a blog in English. The supervisor teachers are :Gripsios A/ Kafetzi V./ Zihnali M.

• A school radio station broadcasting online. The supervisor teachers are : Kambouridis K./ Kyriakidis M./ Skaltsas G.

• A project about Paris through the music of Edith Piaf under the supervision of Mrs  Farmakidou.

• A programme  about  substance dependence. The supervisor teachers are:  Anastasiadou M./ Kyparissis  M./ Petkou S.

Through these programmes our primary purpose is to meet our students’ needs and interests, to develop the unique talents they possess, to teach them important life skills. All these teams are the glue that binds the school community together. They provide an environment in which both students and teachers can explore who they are and what they might be in a way that is just not possible in the official classroom.

We truly believe that the knowledge and the experience our students get by energetically participating in these programmes will help them succeed in the various and varied roles they will undertake in future.

The reasons why to visit Serres.

Serres is a very beautiful town and it is worth to visit it. There are many tourist attractions like the Bezesteni, the Kerkini lake,Alistrati cave,the Acropolis. Also,there is St.Ioannis location,Lailias mountain and the ski Center, Amphipolis ,St Anargiroi valley and others. Have a look at some of them…..

Lialias 

Lailias is a mountain in Serres in the Macedonia region in Greece. There is a ski center there, too which is popular among skiers. However, Lailias is a beautiful and relaxing place for those who love nature. In Lailias someone can do many activities such as snowboarding, skiing, sledging and trekking in the forest. People can also visit the challet to rest and enjoy a drink or a delicious dish. After visiting the Lailias mountain and the ski center you will surely appreciate that trip.

Aghios Giannis

Two kilometers from Serres there is the picturesque suburb of Aghios Giannis. The century-old trees and the abundant water flow forming in several places waterfalls really impress the visitor. The greenery together with the natural water and the whole amazing natural landscape make this suburb famous throughout Greece.

Thousands of visitors from across the country search the coolness and tranquility here especially during the summer months. Open all year round there are lots of restaurants and cafes.

Bezesteni Museum

The Bezesteni Museum of Serres was built in the 15th century. It is located in the middle of the town and is now used as an archaeological museum. The Bezesteni was used as a market after the war but then it was abandoned. Later, it was used as place to store archaeological material and now it is a museum. There are various interesting exhibits for any visitor to admire such as ancient everyday objects, statues or vessels. Even those who are not so much interested in art or history ,they will surely be stunned.

 Zinzirli Mosque

Zinzirli Mosque is located in Serres. It has recently been renovated and its opening to the public took place a few months ago. Too many people have already come to visit this Turkish temple. Its name wasn’t given at random. The big amount of golden coins, which was required for the payment of a Turkish tax, was named <<zinzirli>>. The exact date of its construction isn’t known, but it is believed that it must be the year 1492 when Serres was still under the Turkish occupation. Not only its architecture but also the interior of the mosque is spectacular and there are so many things to admire, from old findings to photos of the previous centuries. Everyone can get a lot of information about people’s life at that time. So it surely deserves a visit.
